Lookie what I wrote

I just posted a blog on Toronto Street Fashion about FTA's Sustainable Fashion 101! I'm proud of myself so go read it or we're, like, totally not friends.

Speaking of friends, my friend Josh and his rad friends are holding an art show about urban botany at HotShots Gallery! Make sure you stop by for Pedestrian Sundays!

Reading Round-Up

There were a few articles that I read this week that really struck me a rad, and I would like to share!

1. First of all, Andrew Sardone does an amazing job at reporting on a Toronto store I really need to visit, the Independent Designers Outlet. Support your local scene! :)

2. One of my favorite journalists Leah McLearen dissects Cheap Culture... That 99 cent lipstick may cost you your future. A great read for anyone trying to curb their consumerism- maybe a goal kick-started because of this garbage strike.
"The culture of cheap has driven down wages (by outsourcing manufacturing and ushering in an era of big-box mega-chains), driven up personal debt (by tricking us into spending more on scads of cheap stuff and less on carefully chosen quality) and created the globalized economy in which underpaid developing-world labour churns out disposable merchandise for the bargain-hungry West." -L. McLearen
3. Finally, the Toronto Star tipped me off to The Uniform Project. The beautiful Sheena Matheiken has vowed to wear one dress for a whole year. (Well, 7 identical dresses- one for each day.) The project is an exercise in sustainable fashion, and in my opinion a true exercise of what style really is about. She is using this project as a year long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation. I love the quote:
"I was looking for a way to raise funds while engaging in visual medium."

Way to enforce awesome...

Magic Midnight Bike Ride...

What are you doing tomorrow? I have to work, which stinks because I wish I could be going to this.

Burning Man is one of the most mind-blowing week long party/art show that this world has to offer. Toronto "Burners", as they are known, are having a picnic and magic bike ride tomorrow. It kind of a way for newbies to connect with more seasoned Torontonian Burners, who will be going to Black Rock City the Nevada desert this August... the theme this year?
"Evolution"
Nature never made a plan, nor does it seem to copy very well. No living thing is ever quite the same as others of its kind. Charles Darwin called this Natural Variation. There is a kind of subtle chaos, a supple element of chance and change, residing at the core of living things. Our theme this year prompts three related questions: What are we as human beings, where have we come from, and how may we adapt to meet an ever-changing world?

Alma Mater Envy

Luxury brand LVMH teamed up with FIT (the Yale of the Fashion world) to created the Bike in Style Challenge, a semester long program where students were mentored by DKNY to create stylish and practical bike wear for the Urban Cyclist. The requirements included a poncho, a jacket and a travel bag for both men and women. This competition really kicks the butt of any competition offered at Ryerson, which were mainly just exercises in disappointment and confusion.

The award ceremony was held at the LVMH Tower Magic Room on Tuesday, June 2 in New York City. There was a celebrity appearance by Hillary Duff, who apparently is a big biking enthusist.

Priests on Bicycles (Fellini's Roma)

If you look closely the two Priests are riding what looks almost identical to my red folding bike, Lady in Red... spooky coincidence?

Bicycle Aht

There is a great little bike-aht show going on at Hotshots Art Gallery in Kensington Market. It was supposed to close today, but it's open for another week!

Called "Will You Be My Bicycle" (adorable!), it is a combination of print, textile and video aht.

You should totally go, they have great espresso there too, and fresh squeezed juice outside! Score!

Zombie Voodoo Spells with Micki Pellerano

So, before the internet existed people had to do something to keep themselves occupied. For the past 2000 years people have just watched television or gone to church but before that there was a whole bunch of weird shit that we don't do anymore. Hunting rituals, black masses, masonic temple initiation rites and zombie voodoo spells.

People don't do too many black masses anymore for a lot of reasons - mostly because the internet is alot safer. For a while you'd get burned at the stake for trying them, but a guy named Micki Pellerano from New York is bringing them back. He's a performance artist/amazing draughstsman/filmmaker who went to the NYU Tisch School's Experimental Theater Wing, and studied Mystical and Esoteric writing.

... but pictures of his art show a guy who is totally, totally out of control and into "blood, semen, scarification, nitrous oxide and ecstatic dance".
Can you say hoo-leeee shiiit???
